“It was the perfect return to Bolton and a fantastic day.
In the first-half we played football in the right areas and used the ball well in terms of putting their back four under pressure.
The quality of the first goal was key in setting up the win, and then of course Oba Martins did what he does best.
His first goal was an absolutely brilliant piece of skill. The second goal involved a bit of luck but really Oba made his own luck because he drove at their defence.
At half-time I said the players had to change the way they played a little because I knew Bolton would throw everything at us.
They did that and it was disappointing to concede a goal from our corner.
We were on the rack for a little bit and Bolton started filling the box with bodies and balls, but credit to our lads they coped with that because we were set up to cope with it."
“I want to improve Newcastle to a point where they haven't been before.
With the support of the owner and chairman the club is moving forward very quickly.
I am 40% where I want to be. There is another 60% to go and I have got to buy myself some time to get there.
It is about winning matches and we have managed to start well.
When I took over at Bolton in 1999 we never stopped winning and that gave me the chance to build a fantastic structure at the club.
I want to do that at Newcastle but it might take me a year or two.
I am not sure what level these players are at yet. They showed me a lot against Bolton which makes me very pleased.
We have set a standard I do not want them to slip out of.
We have a clear week before the Villa game, which will enable us to work on the fitness and the shape of the side."
