Our name is on the cup

In the war there was a saying that "you only had to worry about the one with your name on it", scant consolation to our neighbours, Mr & Mrs Doodlebug, but a tenety that many lived by. The same is often said about the FA Cup, "this year our names on it". Sometimes you have a year when all the luck that has deserted you in previous years falls at your feet.

Think of Sunderland beating Leeds, they had every ounce of luck imaginable as well as a miraculous double save to prevent Leeds equalizing. Think of Southampton beating United, and remember that they cleared of the line three times before Stokes scored with their only shot of the game. Think of Wimbledon beating Liverpool, Beardsley had a perfectly good goal disallowed because he was fouled beforehand and Aldridge had a penalty saved.

Their names were on the cup, the other team were powerless to change fate.

This year we have had all the luck that has deserted us for years. The draw couldn't really have been kinder, practically home ties against teams below of us. We also had a big few slices of luck in those games. Burnley really should have equalized, and only whatever the blokes name was will now how he missed from about a yard out, and I doubt very much if we would have got a result up there on a cold Wednesday night. Tranmere could easily have equalized in the replay, and had the shot that scraped the post been a foot to the left, I suspect we would have lost. In the second half of the semi Sunderland had half a dozen clear cut chances, and with our depleted line up we would have struggled to keep them out through extra time. But our destiny was pre-ordained. We were destined to get to the Cup Final.

So to Saturday. On paper we haven't got a hope in hell. Go through the two teams, man for man, and see if you can honestly say we have one player who would replace his United counterpart. Only Cahill, and Wise (a few years ago) would even make their subs bench. But this is the FA Cup and reputations count for nothing. This is all about fate, and this year our name is on the cup.

On May 22nd our team will be on the biggest stage in world football. Forget the World Cup, Champions League or European Championships. Only football fans watch them. The FA Cup Final is the game the whole world watches. For a day the name of Millwall will be on everybody's lips, as we fulfill our destiny and pull off the biggest shock since David picked up a stone all those years ago.

Our name is on the cup, and there is nothing Ferguson, Keane, Scholes or the rest can do about it.

See you in Cardiff for the biggest day of our lives.
