Ägarbyte i Charlton Athletic: Global Football Partners köper klubben av Thomas Sandgaard
Då var allt undertecknat, kommunicerat och klart. Global Football Partners köper Charlton Athletic av Thomas Sandgaard, som därmed avslutar sin era som ägare efter tre år.
Då var dagen kommen. Efter sju månaders spekulationer, vändningar och turer hit och dit, så har Charlton Athletic till slut genomgått en försäljning och byte av ägandeskapet. Det är Global Football Partners som tagit sig igenom exklusivitetsperioden, nått överrenskommelse med Thomas Sandggard, fått undertecknelse av EFL och FA och nu slutligen kan presenteras som klubbens nya ägare. Detta kommunicerades under kvällen i två separata nyhetsutgick på kvällens officiella och sociala kanaler.
Global Football Partners är ett konsortium bestående av flertalet aktörer som nu tillsammans utgör ägarskapet av klubben. De mest framstående namnen, som frontat konsortiet i affären, är amerikanerna Gabriel Brener och Joshua Friedman. Dessa kompletteras sedan av amerikanen Warren Rosenheld, Singaporebaserade ACA Football Partners, amerikanerna Munir Javeri och Marc Boyan, samt britten och den före detta Sunderlanddelägaren Charlie Methven.
Dessa låter i pressmeddelandet redogöra för att två punkter nu ska omedelbart ska bearbetas och bli genomsyrande i klubben:
* Att handlingar ska vara rådande och väga tyngre än ord och stora löften.
* En mycket erfaren ledningsgrupp ska installeras.
En del av detta har redan börjat sättas på plats, i och med att övertagandet nu är ett faktum. Några av namnen känner vi till sedan konsortiet första försök till ett övertagande i december- och januarimånad under den dåvarande exklusivitetsperioden. Två av dessa är Jim Rodwell som kliver in som Managing Director och Ed Warrick som Group Finance Director. En annan återvändare är Steve Sutherland som inrättas som Interim Commercial Manager.
Styrelsen som kommer omgärda Rodwell omfattas av före detta Charltonspelaren Paul Elliott och Charltonsupportern Gavin Carter som Executive Directors. En Technical Director och Director of Performance kommer att presenteras inom en snart framtid.
Charltons nuvarande VD, Peter Storrie, som varit verksam i klubben sedan i februari, kommer stanna på sin position sommaren ut men lämnar sedan sin post.
Som kommunikatör och talesperson för Global Football Partners uttalade sig Charlie Methven bland annat följande om den nu lyckade affären:
“We would like to thank Thomas Sandgaard, Peter Storrie and the club staff for their cooperation during the acquisition process. As an ownership group, my fellow shareholders and I are excited to begin this new chapter at Charlton whilst being respectful of the scale of the task that faces our management team in restoring the fortunes of this great club."
“Getting to this point has been a long road that has left Charlton’s loyal fans uncertain about the future direction of their club. We intend to bring that uncertainty to an end through actions rather than words or grand promises. However, we do want to place on record at this point that GFP’s ambition is to build a football club noted for its professionalism, integrity and intense focus on success. To that end, we are appointing and empowering a Senior Management Team (SMT) that we believe has the relevant experiences and energy to drive the club forward.”
Jim Rodwell, Managering Director:
“The hard work begins now. The brief given by the ownership group to the Senior Management Team is clear: to bring our experience to bear in pursuit of incremental and continual improvement throughout every aspect of the club. We recognise that this process will at times be challenging, and that progress will not always be linear, but we will always operate with the best interests of the club in mind. Charlton Athletic is famed within football for what it has achieved when united in purpose - our objective is to do what needs to be done to regain that spirit of togetherness and move forward together.”

För en supporter är det nu skönt att ha den här processen avklarad och förbi. Det är alltid ovisst och oroligt när man är mitt i en eventuell försäljning och ett övertagande (det har vi inte minst ärr från förr), och den har gången har det också fått ta sin lilla tid. Således ska det från dags dato blickas framåt under nytt ägarskap. Sedan vet vi också från förr - på grund av de nämnda ärren - att det nu handlar om just handlingar från de nya aktörernas sida, och inte ord och löften. Nu gäller det att agera och faktiskt få denna fotbollsklubben att gå framåt. De nya ägarna är inne på det själva, men det är inget man hurrar över förens det verkligen syns förbättringar också. På så vis kan man endast tillåta sig att bli latent optimistisk till när nya ägare presenteras. Det är bara upp till bevis för dem att prestera!
Det andra pressmeddelandet utgjordes av ett avskedsmeddelande från Thomas Sandgaard, som nu i och med försäljningen avslutar sitt ägandeskap efter tre år i klubben. Danskens meddelande löd i sin helhet enligt följande:

After nearly three years as Charlton Athletic Owner, I am pleased to announce the handover to new owners. During my time with Charlton, I sincerely appreciated the excitement, gratitude and connection with you as fans and supporters of this great club. The welcome when I purchased the club was incredible and I am hopeful the new ownership receives the same warm reception as well.
My time at Charlton Athletic was not without its challenges. I shared the frustrations and disappointment that stemmed from the results we faced. The journey has indeed been bittersweet, painted with both criticism and appreciation, each equally important in its own right.
Thank you for supporting the club's progression in some key areas the past three years including advancing the women's game when we turned the women's team full-time professional in 2021, engaging in the early excitement and togetherness around the infamous 'Our Club, Your Car' campaign and watching the continued progression of the academy and academy players.
One memory, in particular, stands out among the rest - the electrifying match in the Carabao Cup against Manchester United. The echoing chants from our loyal fans at Old Trafford still resound in my ears. Facing a club of such magnitude on their home turf was no small feat, but our team, coaches and support staff turned the challenge into a display of incredible perseverance and unshakeable belief. It was a monumental evening, filled with adrenaline, suspense and immense pride. That night, we showed the world what Charlton Athletic is capable of.
I would be remiss if I did not express my deepest gratitude to our dedicated and hard-working staff and players. Your tireless efforts and commitment have been the lifeblood of this club. You have shown remarkable resilience in the face of adversity and your passion for the game has been a constant source of inspiration. To Dean Holden, Karen Hills, Steve Avory, as well as Peter Storrie, who has done an excellent job since his appointment in February, to our sponsors who trusted and supported us throughout this journey; we are grateful for the role you played in elevating the club to its current stature.
As I pass the reigns over to SE7 Partners, I wish the new owners all the best in leading this great club back to the Championship and eventually the Premier League again.
In closing, while the journey has been demanding, it has also been immensely rewarding. Charlton Athletic is more than a football club. It is a community, a family, a bond that unites, from the staff to the players, from the sponsors to the most crucial part of our team - you, the fans. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this journey.
I move on from Charlton Athletic, not with a heavy heart, but with a sense of pride. I am leaving this club knowing that its future is bright and full of potential.

Kort sagt, de tre åren med Thomas Sandgaard blev inte riktigt vad någon hade hoppats. Det blev tre år i League One, varav två av dem främst bestod av besvikelser. Det var nog inte så lätt att äga en fotbollsklubb som Sandgaard först trodde när han fick sin barndomsdröm uppfylld. På tal om handlingar kontra tunga ord och stora löften, så kommer nog Sandgaard för alltid förknippas med det sistnämnda. Men, han kommer också från och med nu vara inskriven i Charltons historieböcker och som supporter kommer man för evigt vara tacksam för att han faktiskt handlade under sommaren och hösten 2020. Sandgaard klev in, köpte klubben och räddade den från en mycket mörk avgrund under en av de svåraste tiderna i klubbens historia. Det är ett faktum och för det kommer vi alltid vara oändligt tacksamma.
