After a summer spent watching a meaningless Mickey Mouse tournament on the TV, the important things in life have now begun. Of course it’s the world famous Intertoto Cup, where Europe’s elite clubs get the chance to do battle. In the distance, the Premier League approaches and the question on the lips of the fans of the worlds best football club (That is Aston Villa) is, ‘How are The Villa going to do this season’
It’s been a pretty strange summer for the Villa, plenty of changes were predicted but nothing much has happened (though it is likely that there will be a few changes over the next week or so). The expected departures of Dublin, Wright, Stone and JPA have not happened. Instead it looks like Boateng and Merson will go very soon. Not too many people are bothered about Boateng, he has not done much for us since he arrived from Coventry. Merson is a Holte End hero, sure he does not keep himself too fit (and he has a history of too much partying) and is almost 35, but he is capable of winning games on his own, we have no other players that can use the ball as well as him.
The saga continues about JPA and Alpay, they have not played in the Intertoto (and so are able to play for other teams in European games) and maybe that indicates that they will still go, but nobody is really sure. Nobody wants them to go, as they are quality players. They are the sorts of players that we need to keep if we want to be considered as a major club
Of the new arrivals, you will all be familiar with Allback. He had a quiet World Cup and most Villa fans were not particularly impressed, but that has changed after seeing him in his first few Villa games. He has looked sharp and powerful and his stunning volley in front of the Holte End in his home debut means that he is half way to becoming a Villa hero. It has been described as the second best debut goal (behind only Luc Nilis’ against Chelsea).
Boulding has failed to impress Villa fans and has been disappointing so far, we have seen no evidence of his supposed pace, although he also scored against Zurich, overall he has done very little. Of course it is early days but so far, he looks like a free transfer from Grimsby !
Postma was obviously highly thought of in Holland and a few Den Grafschapp fans came to see him play against Lille. He made a few good saves but his kicking was poor and he looked a bit dodgy, he did not come out well for crosses and made a few fumbles. He is a long way behind the flying Finn.
De La Cruz is one of the most famous players in his home country and so we will wait and see what he can do. Hopefully his football is better than he dress sense, when he was introduced to the fans during the Zurich game he had a nightmare white suit on (looked like he was off Miami Vice). Maybe that is the style in Ecuador, but if he wore it down Broad Street on a Saturday night the Brummies really would take the piss.
Generally, Villa fans are not expecting very much from the season (especially if JPA and Alpay leave) but the games so far (excluding Zurich away) have been very encouraging. They played very well in the 3-0 demolition of Zurich and the draw at Lille. If they are signs of what is to come, then we might have a good season after all
The flying Finn made some excellent saves against the Swiss and Mellberg was immaculate against very quick forwards. Staunton has returned from captaining the Irish in the World Cup, in excellent form. The whole team have played pretty well so far, though there have been a few negatives, Delaney has looked strangely indecisive, Boulding seemed out of his depth. Postma looked a bit dodgy and Hitz and Crouch haven’t done particularly well. It is very early days though, there certainly are signs that the team a capable of having a very good season.
Villa had 200 fans in Switzerland and had 400 against Lille (including some Belgian Villans with a large Belgian flag). Considering that there is only 3 or 4 days to arrange travel to get to Intertoto games, the turnouts were pretty good.
No doubt everybody has no had the opportunity to see the new kits. The home kit is the best one since the 70’s. A proper Villa kit that Villa fans have been asking for, for years. We don’t want bloody stripes or patterns. A Villa shirt should be Claret with pale blue arms. At last the club have listened. It is right that Rover are the sponsors as they are a massive local company employing thousands of West Midlands people and Villa should be taking pride in the area (Rather than German Yoghurt makers or Korean computer firms)
You will all get the chance to see Villa quite a lot early in the season as we are on Sky TV quite often. Make sure you see the game against the Shit on 15 September. It is strange that Sky will show it. Sky would never show Wolves v Albion as the obscene chanting went on for 90 minutes. I don’t know what Sky are expecting with Villa v the bluenose bastards. It is likely that there will be trouble at the game but I hope not. The IFK fan being killed in Stockholm has been in the English papers and it should make people think. The problem here is that most bluenoses cannot read, they have consistently bought shame on the City of Birmingham for years due to their behaviour. It is not just the fans. The players also have a reputation as drunken yobs regularly being arrested for causing trouble, from Tony Coten and Robert Hopkins in the 80’s, to Paul Tait in the 90’s and now Curtis Woodhouse. Make no mistake the whole club, from the Porn King Sullivan, down to the players and the moronic fans are total scum, every last one of them.
Hopefully they (and Albion) will go straight back down, never to be heard of again. With a bit of luck, the red bastards will go down with them – though I doubt it !
