As I was walking across the leafy West Park towards the KC Stadium this afternoon, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement that had been drained out of me after last seasons relegation from the Premier League. A real anticipation of victory, something that had been more of a dream of late. I really did think that we were going to win today and went for a prediction of 2-1 before the match.
I walked past Tiger Leisure, (the stadium shop) and noticed the mass of people waiting to purchase the new home strip. At £43 I thought I would leave it a few more weeks myself. Got into the stadium around half 2 and got myself ready for the match.
The first 20 minutes in all honesty were pretty mundane. We passed it about at the back for a bit, they passed it about at the back for a bit. Then we tried hitting it over their back four for a while, and they had a go at that as well. I would like to tell you the atmosphere was electric but the reality is that it was as flat as anything. You could sense just about everyone was waiting for something to happen. Just as 23 minutes had passed that's exactly what happened. Nobby Solano passed a ball into the feet of John Bostock who turned the defender on the spot. Laid the ball in-front of himself, and smashed the ball from at least 25 yards into the top right hand corner of the net with his left foot leaving the whole stadium in a shocked uproar.Not bad considering he only signed on loan from Tottenham the day before? They might as well close the Goal of the season award tomorrow because I can't see anyone scoring a better goal than that this season, it was simply World Class. He ran back into his own half waiving his shirt above his head and rightly picked up a booking for the privilege of doing so.
I would like to say that the game burst into life after that but in reality it went back to the simple passing at the back. Swansea had a few half chances but lacked any real threat upfront and the first half withered out with nothing really to report.
The Second half started much the same as the first, you could tell it was just not going to be a very exciting game today. Hull looked comfortable, Swansea looked out of their depth. A simple corner came in their goalkeeper blundered it and it fell to the Captain Ian Ashbee to put his foot through the ball and make it 2-0. After that Swansea had a 10 minute spell of pressure but it really came to nothing and The Tigers had no great problem easing the game out. A few silly mistakes from Zayatte and Kilbane respectively Almost allowed the visitors in, but as a whole the defence was solid and I don't think The Swans ever really looked like scoring a goal. The final 20 minutes consisted of the tigers putting some good play in but with no real threat and the Strong Midfield I mentioned Pre season just bossed the game. With Ashbee and Cairney playing keep ball and putting some clever passes in.
The Tigers came close to getting a third after a clever bit of work from Tom Cairney but a last ditch tackle prevented him from getting a shot off in the box and the game ended 2-0.
The Tigers didn't really have to break sweat in this one and will have to work a lot harder than that for 3 points this season. An Ordinary game, which will be remembered for a truly exceptional goal.
The Tigers travel travel to Millwall next week and will probably have to do more than that to get 3 points but Nigel Pearson is no fool and will have the team in good shape going into the game at the New Den.
