Klubben vill behålla Kinnear och Bassong
Joe Kinnear får fortsatt förtroende av klubbens ledning trots hans fysiska bakslag som renderat i att han nu ligger på sjukhus. Samtidigt sägs klubben vara beredda att erbjuda mittbacken Bassong ett nytt kontrakt.
Inför matchen mot West Brom för två och en halv veckor sedan la Joe Kinnear in sig själv på sjukhus efter det att han känt av att han led av högt blod tryck. Sedan dess har han genomgått en operation som föll väl ut och hans rehabilitering är nu i full gång. Det har dock funnits frågetecken kring hans framtid då detta var andra gången på tio år som han varit tvungen att besöka sjukhuset för en allvarlig sjukdom.
Trotts allt detta tycks han ha ett hundraprocentigt stöd från klubbens ledning och ägare. Idag har klubbens Managing Director, Derek Llambias, ånyo uttalat sitt stöd för den kontroversielle irländaren. Till den lokala tidningen The Evening Chronicle uppges han ha sagt följande:
“Joe was on the phone for about an hour and a half to Chris on Saturday.
“Chris and Colin will talk to him on a regular basis. Unless they cut the phone lines around his house there is no way he won’t commun-icate.
“He phoned me at 11pm on Saturday night because he needed some information.
“The next morning he was back on the phone to Chris for two hours.
“He then rang me again. I have had to tell him he is meant to be resting.
“It’s the way Joe is.
“He is always on the phone, looking at stats and talking to the team.
“He has to learn that for two or three weeks he has to calm down and take it easy.
“He’s passionate and he cares – he gets what Newcastle is all about.
“I hope he grows on everybody. He’s an honest fella and he loves the club.
“The thing with the manager is we’re backing him. He’s back on board.
“He’s got to make a good recovery and he’s got to take it easy. He needs to chill out.
“But I will see him on Saturday.”
Vidare så bekräftade han också att Chris Hughton och Colin Calderwood kommer att behålla ansvaret för laget tills Joe Kinnear är tillbaka från sin sjukdomsvistelse. Detta tros tidigast bli mot Stoke den elfte april. Det skulle innebära att tränarduon Hughton och Calderwood ansvarar för ytterligare fem matcher. Llambias:
“Chris is doing a good job. He’s full of confidence.
“Colin is in there helping us and Joe is still in the background.
“We’re happy with that situation and that will take us through until the end of the season.
“Chris is a thorough football man and a highly respected coach.
“The players are full of respect for him and Colin Calderwood.”
Avslutningsvis så passade den hårt ifrågasatte Derek att tala om Mike Ashley och hur han tror att det kommer att gå för laget under säsongsavslutningen.
“This is his passion. He’s a football supporter generally.
“He loves Newcastle. I can’t remember when he went out before or after a game.
“He misses that. He loved being out in the Toon after games.
“Even during the time he wasn’t coming to matches, he was at his local pub kicking every ball in front of the TV.
“I think we’ll stay up.
“We’ve had conversations about where we are going points-wise. I have said 46 points.
“Everybody thinks I am potty, but I’m confident of it.
“Then we can crack on with where we are going in the future.
“A lot of it is going to be filling the holes we need to fill. We’ve been unfortunate with our injuries. But we’re looking to build this squad.”
Tidningen har även rapporterat om att Sebastien Bassong ska bli erbjuden ett nytt kontrakt i sommar. Den unge fransmannen anslöt till klubben i somras och kan i princip redan nu utnämnas till säsongens bästa spelare. Mittbacken får därmed ses som årets kap i Premier League då han kostade blott £1,5 miljoner att köpa loss från Metz och har en betydligt mindre lön än vad övriga lagkamrater uppges ha. Hans nuvarande kontrakt går ut sommaren 2011 men en eventuell förlängning skulle i så fall sträcka sig längre än så. Bassong skulle dessutom få en löneökning.
