“Sporting Clube de Portugal fans are quite shocked from last match display in what concerns the referee team performance headed by Mr. Viktor Kassai in the match Sporting Clube de Portugal – Fiorentina for the Play-off for the UEFA Champions League.
Indeed, the Hungarian referee completely failed to enforce the necessary discipline and rules, disregarding UEFA recommendations for the referees, namely the ones concerning violent behaviour.
We would like to underline the following situations (check for match highlights here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBM88621zII):
1st Half :
1. First goal of the match – for Fiorentina – started with a clear handball at midfield from a Fiorentina player. (1:08 in the above video – image in replay)
The goal should be considered invalid.
2. Fiorentina defender Gamberini attacked Sporting forward Liedson when the ball was out of play. The referee clearly saw the incident and showed a yellow card when the rules state that these actions must be sanctioned with a direct red card. (from 1:24 in the above video)
Fiorentina down to ten players.
2nd half
3. Fiorentina player Dainelli blocked Sporting midfielder Moutinho from starting a dangerous counter-attack, pushing his shirt without having any intention of playing the ball anymore(from 2:16 in the above video).
Yellow card to be showed. It would be the second one for Dainelli so he would be sent off. Fiorentina down to nine players
4. Sporting Goal – Simon Vukcevic scored the 1-1 and, while celebrating, took off his shirt.Second yellow card and an easy sending off from the referee (from 3:05 in the above video). (This rule abolishment should really be considered as it makes no sense that a player receives a yellow card when he is just celebrating joyfully a goal, without making any kind of advertising whatsoever)
We know the effort UEFA has been putting in its competitions and we must remember last year Vitoria Guimaraes elimination from the Champions League due to referee errors, as publicly assumed by Michel Platini. We don’t want to agree that, one year after, everything is the same or worse.
We also lack understanding on how can it be possible for such a highly reputed competition, with the financial impacts it has on clubs, can cope with such an unprofessional and feeble referee. Maybe there are facts which deserve some kind of further investigation…
From our point of view, the aggression Liedson suffered should be severely punished by UEFA, in respect for its campaign for Fair Play in the matches.”
