Gary Neville om Phil Jones och en central mittfältare: “I think this lad’s going to be a star, I really do. I think he’s going to be somebody who could potentially be a captain of Manchester United in the future. He looks really solid and he’s somebody who can be a huge player for the club for the next 10 years. There’s a lot of potential there and the performances he’s put in over the last two years have been outstanding, particularly against us. For a 19-year-old that’s excellent. He’s a great signing for us.
I think the manager will sign a central midfielder because of Owen Hargreaves leaving and Paul Scholes retiring. The club keep transfers very quiet because they don’t want other clubs to be aware that they’re moving for somebody. They don’t even tell the players, they don’t tell the staff… it’s done very quietly.”
Patrice Evra om David de Gea: "David is a good goalkeeper. We don’t know him yet but we’ll give him a nice welcome. It’s never easy to replace a big goalkeeper like Van der Sar, and I’m a little bit sad that Edwin has retired, but De Gea is the future now.
He has to work hard because it’s not easy to do the job Edwin did, but he’ll be given every opportunity. We wish him all the best because he has come to the biggest club in the world, and it’s important for him to give 100% every day."
Arthur Albiston om samtliga tre nyförvärv: “Our supporters are renowned for giving people time. Of course, there’s nothing they like more than watching young players come through the United ranks into the first team but they’ll have similar feelings about Jones and de Gea, given they’re only 19 and 20.
The fans at Old Trafford have loads of patience with new players coming to the club, especially young ones, and they’ll get behind them. Everyone’s going to make the odd mistake but our fans are very forgiving. I’m sure Peter Schmeichel would hold his hand up to one or two mistakes in his first season. That’s something that goes with the territory. The crowd will give de Gea, Jones and Young every backing and if the new boys perform as well as Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling did in their first season, I’m sure the supporters and the manager will all be delighted.
De Gea’s in a very similar situation to Gary Bailey, who got into our side at a very young age and went on to be a fantastic servant for United. I don’t know what de Gea is like confidence-wise or character-wise. But Bailey had a strong personality, with bags of confidence. And although he was thrown in at the deep end, he wasn’t shy about giving orders to experienced international defenders.
That’s something you’ve got to do as a goalkeeper and some people find it difficult. But all players have to speak on the pitch and a goalkeeper has to be especially vociferous and organise his defence. De Gea has proved he can play in front of big crowds – he just needs to get to know the lads, especially the defenders. Like Bailey, Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, he musn’t be shy in telling them what to do.”
Rio Ferdinand: ”We always enjoy going over to play in America. MLS is doing very well now and more and more people are aware of it over here. They’ve had some big players come over from Europe to play there as well like Becks, Freddie Ljungberg and Thierry Henry. The facilities are fantastic and it’s great to be able to visit new places when you go on tour. I'm sure it’ll be a good trip and we're all looking forward to it."
Wayne Rooney: "The standard of football in America is very good. I’ve played against the national team before [for England] and it’s always a difficult, physical game. They always work hard and give everything.
Pre-season is a really important time and the matches we play on tour really help to bring your fitness on for the start of the season. Being able to meet our fans across the world is another great thing about the tours.
Wherever we go they are there to greet us whether it be at the airport, outside our hotel or at the stadiums – it’s great for the players to see what amazing support we have all round the world. Hopefully we can put on some good performances for them during the games on tour."
