Christmas, a time for celebration, family, fun and reflection, writes David Bernstein. I have been thinking on our Club’s present position and the progress we have made.
Four years ago on 19th December 1998 we lost to York City and fell to 12th in the 2nd Division, the lowest point in our long history. I had been Chairman for eight months.
We had worked hard to stabilise and turn around the Club and I believed we were doing the right things. But results had gone from bad to worse. As Christmas 1998 grew close I was deeply worried.
Wins at Wrexham and critically at home to Stoke started a recovery that culminated in what I believe was the most important match our Club has ever played. The Wembley final against Gillingham.
Since then we were of course again promoted at Blackburn, disappointingly relegated and then achieved glorious promotion at the first attempt under Kevin Keegan. It has been an unbelievable four years
As Christmas 2002 approaches the problems of 1998 seem a distant nightmare. We are months away from our move to the City of Manchester Stadium, for which we have effectively already sold 31,000 season tickets.
The Club has professionalized in every area and of course Kevin Keegan has taken our team to the middle of the Premier League. We have made considerable investment in our playing squad and have made funds available for the January transfer window.
The success of the last four years has been the result of much hard work and expertise by our Directors and staff. I would like to thank everyone in our Club for their tremendous efforts and our fans for their incredible support.
The size and intensity of our crowd when we beat Stoke City in 1998 was no less than we now enjoy in the Premier League. We should be in for an exciting 2003, hopefully focussing on the top half of the league table.
I hope you all enjoy your football, have a great Christmas and a happy and healthy new year.
David Bernstein
