How to Bring Your Kids Up Right

How to Bring Your Kids Up Right

............otherwise, who knows what might happen!

We are Stoke, We are Stoke, We are Stoke.”

The Life Of Gordon Banks!!
By Esme aged 10

England Caps: 73
Goals: 0 (he was a goal keeper)
Teams: Chesterfield, Leicester City and Stoke City.

Chapter one

Gordon banks is known as a famous goalkeeper.
he was born in Sheffield in the 30th December, 1937.
Gordon was the youngest of four boys David, Michel and John. Banks’ father had a very difficult job in a steel foundry

In the early fifties, a tragic incident in his childhood involved John, the oldest brother being beaten up so badly that he died.
Banks left school in 1952 to work with a local coal merchant. Later on he became a bricklayer. Although these were dirty and hard jobs, it built up Banks’ strength which helped him to develop skills in his career in being a goalkeeper.

Chapter two

Banks’ love of football occurred when he watched two local football teams, Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United.
Despite working he continued to play football on an amateur level until he was spotted by lower league Chesterfield City in 1953.

However his football career was interrupted when he was called up to do national service in Germany in 1954. One good thing came about from this; Banks met his future German wife Ursula. (They had three children Robert, Wendy and Julia).
Banks returned to England with his future wife and soon got back into playing football for Chesterfield.
Gordon Banks played twenty-three games for Chesterfield before he was signed by Leicester City in 1959; this was a real big move up for him.

 Chapter three

With Banks in goal, Leicester City made it to the F.A Cup finals in 1961 and 1963. Unfortunately they lost both times. However Banks did receive a winner’s medal in 1964 when Leicester won the league cup.
Gordon’s performances did get him recognised by the new England manager Alf Ramsay.
By 1965 Banks was a regular England player and his saves helped England win the World Cup for the one and only time in 1966.
The season following, Leicester city had another goalkeeper called Peter Shilton, Shilton wanted Banks’ place in the team and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Therefore Banks was allowed to leave at the age of thirty he went on and signed for Stoke City in 1967.

Chapter four

Gordon’s first game with Stoke was against his old club Leicester City, fortunately Stoke beat Leicester 3-1

Gordon continued to play for England and was picked to be in goal for the 1970 world cup finals that were being held in Mexico. Banks was known to have made one of the greatest saves known to man; some people call it the save of the century. The football player Pele thought he had scored however Banks dived and knocked the ball over the bar. Sadly England lost the game against Brazil and were eventually knocked out of the finals by Germany. Banks wasn’t playing in this game due to a stomach upset, so the reserve goalkeeper came in to play.

Soon after he was rewarded an OBE by the queen which was a very big honour.

Chapter five

In 1971 Stoke had the heartache of losing to Arsenal in the F.A cup semi final. However, in 1972 Banks helped Stoke win their only major trophy when they beat Chelsea
2 – 1 in the league cup final.
It was also this year when he had the honour of being awarded footballer of the year.

Then tragically in October Banks was involved in a car crash. This caused Gordon to lose an eye; unfortunately this was the end of his career.

Gordon continues to live in the Stoke area with his wife Ursula and he has the honour of being the president of Stoke City football club.
