Sorenson 7, not much to do but what he did do he did do well!
Delaney 8, great defending, not much going forward. A few match winning tackles.
Mellberg 9, best I've seen him play, truly excellent.
Dublin 7, Mellberg made up for some errors, dangerous tackles could have cost us, a threat when he went up front.
Samuel 8, tireless running, not the greatest in defence, but did well going forward. Extra point for scoring!
Hendrie 6, some decent passes, a weak shot, a few stray passes, and an injury. Things are just not going right for him.
McCann 6, (minus a point for the red!). Tut tut, if you are going to hit someone, don't bitch slap them, HIT THEM! A possible five match ban could prove costly for Villa, an unprofessional response in front of the ref.
Hitzlesperger 7, got about well, was strong on the ball, great free kick to give us hope.
Barry 5, looked very tired, too many stray passes, very disappointing. Maybe swap Barry and Samuels positions?
Crouch 8, tireless running, won most headers, if not for a missed chance would have got 10. Lets hope he starts on Saturday.
Vassell 5, waste of talent, took him far too long to get in the game,should have been feeding off Crouches headers, only used his pace occasionally, didn't run at the Bolton defence nearly enough.
Whittingham 6, (came on for Hendrie 47). Looked tired to me, but others have said he had a good game. Roy Aitkin wasn't pleased when he blazed his third attempt over the bar, needs to start hitting the target. A lot of
pressure on a young player though.
Villa Crowd 10. 36 883. Which was outstanding due to cold weather and the fact it was going to take a miracle to progress. Loud throughout, supported the team 100% and didn't mention Blues once.
Bolton Crowd 7, well attended, drowned out by Villa but a valiant effort. Must have been a nervous 90 minutes.
DOL and Roy Aitkin 10. Passionate, Aitkin nearly got sent off, ref got abuse from him and me both when he came over!!! DOL is doing a good job with an increasingly small squad. How long it will take for him to see it
will be impossible to progress this club with Ellis in charge is anyone's
guess. Hopefully not before Doug goes out in his box.
Ref 4: To many yellow cards for a cup game, no end of strange decisions, but I think we were hoping for penalties that would have been very harsh on Bolton. Maybe handball by the clown, but it was the shoulder, so maybe not! If McCann got a red why didn't Thome get at least a yellow for the shove on him?
Chicken Pie 10, went down nicely, could have had another in truth. Washed down with a bottle of coke, just the right amount of fizz!
My ratings defined: 1) Totally awful, had a mare, should be taken out and shot, 2) Awful, but not usual standard, 3) Very poor, needs to improve quickly 4) Poor, below the standard expected, 5) Average, the least expected, 6) Better than average, but in patches only, 7) Good, generally
decent performance, 8) Very good, above the standard, standing out at times, 9) Excellent, stood out all match, 10) Outstanding (aka Paul McGrath!). Truly commanded the match, stunning.
