York City-Port Vale 0-2

Phew! Micky Adams’ side earned their first win in six games after goals from Jennison Myrie-Williams and Lee Hughes secured a vital 2-0 away win over York. Micky Adams reverted back to a 4-4-2 system with Jennison Myrie-Williams and Louis Dodds recalled to the team. Dan Jones was passed fit to make the starting eleven but had to drop to the bench after he pulled up in the warm-up. He was replaced by Rob Taylor. Richard Duffy was also missing through illness, Ryan Burge subject of an internal suspension while Doug Loft and Sam Morsy were serving suspensions.

Vale had started brightly for a chance but York had the best chance through Smith. The Valiants countered immediately as the recalled Myrie-Williams scored his tenth of the season on nine minutes. Myrie-Williams should have doubled his tally on the half-hour mark after Hughes was pushed in the box. But from the resulting spot-kick Myrie-Williams’ weak effort was saved by the keeper.

Minutes later, Vale were indebted to their keeper as Chris Neal pulled off a fine save to stop the home side equalised. Myrie-Williams threatened the York goal again as the half-time break approached but it was 1-0 to the Vale at the break.

Shortly into the second-half Vale doubled their lead thanks to a good finish from Lee Hughes – his sixth goal in Vale colours. After that second goal calmed the nerves, Vale were able to hold on to secure a much needed three points.

To their enormous credit, 1,045 Vale fans made the trip to witness Vale turn their fortunes around.
